Nowadays almost everyone can easily take photos of themselves and post them immediately. But not everyone thinks about it as a way to communicate to the public and have their own voice. So, what makes your’s special? That’s what you should always ask yourself before you take a photo. Below here you can find 5 tips how to make the perfect selfie by Jorge Turell Yarur.
You need a concept
Originality is the most important thing in order to take a good shot. Just think about something that will show who you are as an artist maybe with a strong message or something that will enhance your beauty like a beautiful background, interesting lighting or cool makeup that has never been done before. Also take into consideration that if you are posting your pictures on Instagram is good to have some kind of connection with the pictures that will be next to it and with your whole Instagram feed.
Find a good spot
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to take a beautiful photo of yourself, in fact you can do it at home with the simplest background. What you need is good lighting and a nice background that will make sense with your concept and your outfit (if you are wearing one). First, you need to take a closer look at your home and find spots that you think will look interesting. I usually prefer plain backgrounds so that the outline of my body doesn’t get too messy, but it depends on the idea you have for your picture.
Before you decide which background to use is good to take a picture of yourself as a test because sometimes the light doesn’t hit as good as you might think and it can make you look not as pretty. If you don’t like it, keep trying in different areas and different camera positions until you find the perfect spot. If you are looking for a more studio-like shooting you can use spotlights, lamps or flash. If you want different colours for your background you obviously don’t have to paint your wall. You can use paperboards, sheets, blankets, tablecloths, or something similar and there’s always a way to hung them or clamp them to windows, closets or doors. Also, natural backgrounds like grass, water, rocks or sand look amazing in photos and they aren’t so hard to find. If you find the right spot in a garden it can look very wild or if you live near the beach or forest you can give it a try when it isn’t too full and when the sun is low. Once you have your background and your natural lighting it’s time to shoot.
You can be your own photographer
Fortunately, I discovered that you don’t need a photographer to take pictures of yourself. You only need a tripod and the camera timer or if you are using your phone, something to make it stand straight.
Remember that with the camera timer you only have a few seconds to pose, so you need to think and move quickly. The good thing is that sometimes as you are are rushing to pose you get more natural photos and not so stiff. Also, don’t forget to make sure you are in focus. To do that you need to put something right where you are going to pose to focus with the camera first, press the capture button with the timer on and then go to your spot. I always use a broom to focus before I pose, holding it up from where the camera is positioned so that I can see where to focus in the camera screen. You can also use other objects like a chair, a big pillow or whatever you have and remove it before you pose, although you loose a bit of time for your posing. As soon as you are in focus you can start to get creative.
Do several tries
Taking the perfect picture is a matter of luck. There is usually just a few good pictures in one session. That’s why you need to do a lot of tries and keep changing the position of your body, your facial expressions and even your attitude to have a broad range of photographs to choose from. Once and again you realise your concept is changing but you shouldn’t blind yourself to stick to your original idea. It’s good to see how your idea evolves and go with it and not against it. Even so, there are times when your idea isn’t coming through and you need to change it.
Don’t be scared and change whatever you need to make it work. You can use different makeups, change clothes or even take them out (don’t be ashamed to show your body, embrace it and use it as another element in your idea) You can add elements like fruits, flowers, cables, lights, smoke or other special effects,… Usually you get to one picture that you like a lot and you feel like stopping but you need to decide what’s best first. Sometimes it’s good to stop because you are exhausted and the photo is already good enough, but most of the time is better to take just a few more as you now know what pose you like, just in case you didn’t realise about any mistake it could have.
Choose the right one
Once you are done with your photoshoot it’s time to choose your picture. If you like most of them it’s a sign that you should use more than one to post online. But if you only like a few (something that happens to me most of the time) then just choose one out of all of them.
It isn’t easy to choose just one picture so you need to take your time to think about it. These are the things that I take into consideration in order to choose the best picture of a session. First I select the ones in which I think I look pretty (unless your purpose is to intentionally look ugly), then I decide which ones best describe my idea (even if it has changed a little or a lot) and finally I choose the one that has the best looking framing and overall look. Sometimes the order of the priorities vary. Usually there are little things that need a bit of retouching but if you did a good job then you might not even need it!
If you want to post them then is good to add some filters and tweak the lighting, color and clarity of the photo a little bit so that when people see it in their phones it pops out more. Unless is intentional for your concept, I wouldn’t go too crazy with the filters because you may loose a lot of details that made your photo look more natural and easy.
Partners in crime
To sum up, In my opinion, the harder you work on a picture the greater the result. So make sure you do the best you can before you give up on your photography talent. Also, remember that there are a lot of beautiful people in the world but not everyone knows how to take a great picture of themselves, so use that talent to express yourself and show everyone how cool your selfies are.
