Exclusive interview with the creator of Pretty Vacant Boys.
Where are you from?
So I don’t want to reveal too much about me because I don’t want things to be about me, but my work… I can tell you where I work though: mostly in Berlin, Germany.
What is your website/instagram name?
You are the creator of Pretty Vacant Boys site. Tell us some information how you got the idea to make PVB, since when are you doing it, and what was your expectations?
I think it’s been 3 years now. My idea was to look into the intimacy of boys and document it in an honest way. I want to give a positive image of gay sexuality but I don’t want to idealize it or lie…
How the name Pretty Vacant Boys came from?
It’s named after a Sex Pistols song, Pretty Vacant. You don’t know if it means the boys are „pretty” or „rather vacant”… I love those early days of the Punk movement … They look so creative and simple… I know they are supposed to be super desperate, but their energy is really not.
Are you doing everything on your own, or is there a team behind you?
I’m alone on this project, yes. I don’t think you can look into such intimate things if you are a lot of people. It’s important for me to create a safe spot, a bubble where we feel free during the shootings. The boys forget the camera and all the technics. And to do so, I think I have to be alone.
What is the most difficult part to do this project?
Being independent is quite difficult. Each time I think it’d be the last series of pictures, the last feature film and I won’t have enough money to do something else. Luckily some fans are really supportive and help a lot, even those giving 5€ every now and then or sending a message just to cheer me up.
And what is the most delightful part of it?
Filming… I’m in empathy with the boys I film. It’s a really nice feeling.
I would call your movies like artistic porn, how do you describe the movies you make?
I want to look into the intimacy of boys. Among many things, loneliness, feelings, love… there is also, obviously, a focus on sexuality. I still don’t understand why something so important in our lives should be hidden or taboo… It’s really curious to me. What is wrong about sex that we are supposed to hide it? I read some politicians don’t want to be filmed or photographed while they eat and drink… So, are we supposed to pretend we’re not alive? No, no, no… Sex is a beautiful way to relate to others and it can be really fulfilling… I wouldn’t call my movies porn, because that would be accepting that since they’re about sex, they’re different, they have a special status. Or someone has to explain me why… And I assume the explanation is going to be really sad… For him!
How your friends/family react when they figure out you doing porn movies? Ever was any funny react about it?
Unfortunately, I don’t have bigoted friends. I say unfortunately, because though I think I’m a nice person, I couldn’t help making fun of them…
As a film maker, you have many chances to meet with handsome guys, have you ever dated any of your models, or the filmmaking turned into more fun?
I like the question, it is really funny… I don’t know if I want to reveal too much, because I like the fact that the viewer is also projecting, thinking about his/her own experience and all… Let’s say two things… I’m very serious when I work, there is so many things to think about… And the second point would be that some of the models are former lovers of mine.
If someone wants to be a part of the project as a model, how can he apply?
He should write to me… Really often, my models thought they weren’t good looking enough and hesitated to get in touch… It’s too bad. The project is open to any kind of boys. Yes, sending a message, being nice and friendly… I like when things are human.
